RAMS Surface Characteristic
Datasets
NOTE: There are 2 versions of most datasets available, labeled VFM and HDF5:
VFM - MUST be used with RAMS v4.4 and earlier (also with v5.0x beta versions).
HDF5 - can only be used with RAMS v6. (VFM will also work with v6, but we will phase this out in coming versions.)
-
SST
Contains the global monthly climatological sea surface
temperature data for RAMS at 1 degree resolution (about 100km).
VFM: Global set (0.8 MB)...
HDF5: Global set (1.25 MB)...
-
Landuse
Contains the global landuse
data for RAMS at 30s, or about 1km resolution. Each file
contains 5x5 degree blocks, with the filename denoting the southwest
corner.The USGS
dataset is based on 1-km Advanced Very
High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data spanning April 1992 through March 1993.
VFM: Global set (29.4 MB)...
HDF5: Global set (33.4 MB)...
-
Topography (1km)
Contains the global USGS
topography dataset for RAMS at 30s, or about 1km resolution. Each file contains
5x5 degree blocks, with the filename denoting the southwest corner.
VFM: Global set (259.9 MB)...
HDF5: Global set (311.1 MB)...
-
Topography (20km)
Contains the global USGS topography dataset at
10m, or about 20km resolution. Each file contains 20x20 degree blocks,
with the filename denoting the southwest corner.
VFM: Global set (0.5 MB)...
-
Soil textural class
Contains the global soil texture
data for RAMS at 2 min, or about 4km resolution. Each file
contains 5x5 degree blocks, with the filename denoting the southwest
corner. The dataset is originally from the UN FAO.
ONLY FOR RAMS v5 and v6
VFM: Global set (1.3 MB)...
HDF5: Global set (1.5 MB)...
-
NDVI
Contains the global monthly NDVI
data for RAMS at 30s, or about 1km resolution. Each file
contains 10x10 degree blocks, with the filename denoting the southwest
corner. The data were produced by the USGS and are from the years of 1992-1993.
Each monthly file is about 100 MB and
contains the global set for that month. The HEADER file is required and should be
placed in the directory tree at the same level as the month directories.
ONLY FOR RAMS v6
HDF5:

Microphysics
Contains an example
microphysical collection table (with all GNU values == 2). See the RAMS
namelist documentation for details.
Individual
file...
All files (except the micro file) are in the RAMS standard blocked format for input.
Many files are compressed with gzip. gunzip the files
before you use them.
Any missing file in the global datasets indicates that all of the area that
would be contained in that file is covered by ocean - and as this is assumed
by the model there is no need to have these redundant files in the datasets.
Note that some old versions of
Netscape may gunzip the file when
you download it, but do not remove the .gz (you can tell they're gunzipped
because you get an error when you try to gunzip them) - so you may have to
rename the files (remove the .gz). Or right click on the file name (or link)
and Save Link As...
